Spiritfarer Review: A Cozy Game About Letting Go

Our Spiritfarer review. This gorgeous management game about caring for spirits is one of the most beautiful and moving cozy games ever made — here's who should play it.

By The Cozy Game Guide Team

Some cozy games are about building a farm. Spiritfarer is about something bigger: caring for friends in their final journey, and learning to say goodbye. It sounds heavy — but it’s one of the warmest, most beautiful games you’ll ever play.

In short: if you want a relaxing management game with real emotional depth, Spiritfarer is essential.

What is Spiritfarer?

Developed by Thunder Lotus, Spiritfarer casts you as Stella, the new ferrymaster for spirits on their way to the afterlife. You build and upgrade a boat, sail an open sea, and welcome spirit passengers aboard — each a character with their own story, personality, and favorite things.

Along the way you’ll farm, fish, cook, weave, smelt, and play gentle mini-games to keep everyone happy. And eventually, when each spirit is ready, you take them to the Everdoor to let them go.

It’s available on PC, Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and includes two-player co-op (a second player controls Daffodil the cat).

What it does brilliantly

  • It’s stunning. The hand-drawn animation is gorgeous — every character and frame is full of personality.
  • It’s genuinely moving. The passengers’ stories are beautifully written, and saying goodbye lands with real emotional weight.
  • The loop is deeply relaxing. Sailing, gathering, cooking, and tending your boat is the definition of cozy flow.
  • There’s a lot of it. Dozens of hours of content, with plenty of upgrades and characters to discover.

Where it falls short

  • Travel can feel slow. Later on, sailing back and forth across the map for resources involves some backtracking.
  • It’s a slow burn. This is a game to savor, not rush — if you want fast, snappy progress, it may test your patience.
  • The emotional theme isn’t for everyone. It’s gentle, but it does ask you to sit with loss. That’s the point — just go in knowing it.

Who should play Spiritfarer?

Play it if: you love relaxing management games and want one with heart and a story that stays with you. It’s also a wonderful, gentle co-op game to share with someone.

Maybe skip it if: you want pure, breezy escapism with zero emotional weight, or you find resource backtracking tedious.

The verdict

Spiritfarer is a rare thing: a cozy game that’s as moving as it is relaxing. It’s beautiful, generous, and quietly profound — a high point of the entire genre.

Worth it? Absolutely. It’s one of the games we recommend most often.
