Hello Kitty Island Adventure: Is It Worth It?
Is Hello Kitty Island Adventure worth it on Switch and PC? Our honest review of the surprisingly deep, microtransaction-free Sanrio adventure — what it does well, who it's for, and whether to buy.
Don’t let the bow fool you. Hello Kitty Island Adventure looks like a sugary kids’ app, but it’s quietly one of the most generous, surprisingly deep cozy games around — and now that it’s left Apple Arcade for Switch and PC, far more people can find that out. Here’s our honest take on whether it’s worth it.
In short: yes — it’s far deeper and more charming than it looks, with zero microtransactions and 100+ hours of cozy adventuring. The Sanrio aesthetic is the only real “is this for me?” question.
What is Hello Kitty Island Adventure?
It’s an open-world adventure game from developer Sunblink where you and the Sanrio gang (Hello Kitty, Kuromi, Cinnamoroll, and friends) explore a mysterious island. You’ll glide and swim across distinct biomes — beaches, jungles, snowy peaks — solving light puzzles, completing quests, crafting, and deepening friendships with the characters.
It first launched on Apple Arcade in 2023, then came to Nintendo Switch and PC (Steam) on January 30, 2025, with PlayStation versions following later that year.
What it does well
- It’s shockingly deep. Crafting, baking with Hello Kitty, brewing potions with Kuromi, gift-giving, collectibles, and a genuinely large map — there’s well over 100 hours here.
- No microtransactions, ever. There’s no premium currency and nothing to buy. You unlock everything just by playing — a huge, refreshing rarity.
- The friendship system has real heart. Befriending each character with their favorite gifts is a warm, rewarding core loop.
- Lovely co-op. Invite friends to your island to explore and solve puzzles together — gentle multiplayer that’s perfect for families or partners.
- It’s award-winning for a reason. It earned Apple Arcade’s Game of the Year and a Webby — the polish and care show.
Where it falls short
- The aesthetic is divisive. If the wall-to-wall Sanrio cuteness isn’t your thing, that won’t change — this is unapologetically pastel and adorable.
- It’s very gentle. There’s no real challenge or combat, so players craving tension or difficulty should look elsewhere.
- Its mobile roots show occasionally. A few menus and structures still feel like the Apple Arcade game it started as.
Is it worth it?
Buy it if: you want a huge, genuinely cozy adventure with no predatory monetization — especially if you’re playing with kids or want easy, friendly co-op. It punches way above its cute-app first impression.
Maybe skip it if: the Sanrio look actively puts you off, or you want a meaty challenge rather than a gentle, friendly world.
The verdict
Hello Kitty Island Adventure is the rare licensed game that’s also a great game — deep, generous, polished, and completely free of microtransactions. The only real question is whether the aesthetic clicks with you. If it does (or if you have a young player who’ll adore it), it’s outstanding value and easily one of the comfiest Switch games you can pick up.
Worth it? Yes — one of the most pleasant surprises in cozy gaming.
